Longstanding food brands, retailers and producers are important members of the economic landscape in the metropolitan region and have often been enjoying success on the German and international markets for several decades. For example, one-third of the top 100 German suppliers in the industry are based in Hamburg, which is also home to the headquarters of Edeka, one of the largest supermarket chains in Germany. In addition, the metropolitan region boasts very good R&D infrastructure and scientific establishments related to the field of nutrition.The reputations of several cultivation areas stretch far beyond the region’s borders, including the “Altes Land” area (for its apples and cherries) as well as the Dithmarschen and Elbmarschen areas (for various types of cabbage). The northern part of Lower Saxony is home to BEHR AG, one of Germany’s largest growers of vegetables. And the agricultural activities of RAISA eG also contribute to the value chain.
Süderelbe AG is committed to supporting and fostering this important industry in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. The industry network “foodactive”, which was created through the efforts of Süderelbe AG, is the food network of the metropolitan region.The foodactive network is the central point of contact for the region’s food industry and brings industry players together with each other as well as with university-level and research institutions, politicians, administrators and providers of technical services. In doing so, foodactive provides concrete added value for the companies and lastingly boosts the attractiveness of the region to the industry.
foodactive e.V. is the cluster for the food industry in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. More than 90 companies – primarily from the food industry – are members of this network. With its ties to companies, experts, politics, administration and science, the association is the go-to contact organisation for the food industry.
