The KNMP competence centre for new materials and production is an initiative in the Southern Metropolitan Region of Hamburg that helps small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) gain access to new materials and their processing while supporting the development of new techniques for manufacturing lightweight construction materials.

The project is overseen by Stade-based excellence network Composites United e.V., which works in close cooperation with Süderelbe AG, the Laboratory for Manufacturing Technology (LaFT) of the Helmut Schmidt University of Hamburg, and Hamburg Innovation. Using a decentralised approach, the project will increase awareness of this issue among interested local companies in the Stade, Harburg, Lüneburg, Lüchow-Dannenberg and Uelzen districts as well as provide them with support and guidance on concrete activities.

The network partners of Composites United e.V. are helping SMEs in the region to increasingly integrate promising new lightweight construction materials – especially carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRPs) – into their production processes. The more widespread use of new lightweight construction materials and new production technologies will promote product and process innovations in SMEs. This, in turn, will boost the competitiveness of the companies.

The competence centre began its work at the beginning of 2018.
